Third-Party Cybersecurity Assessment: A Practical Checklist for Vendors

When a large customer kicks off a third-party cybersecurity assessment, they are rarely asking novel questions. They are checking whether your public story (trust center, website, SOC 2 summary) matches the detail in their spreadsheet—and whether you can back claims with evidence. Weak or contradictory answers extend due diligence, delay signatures, and sometimes kill the deal.
This guide gives vendors a practical checklist to prepare once and reuse across many vendor risk cycles. It pairs well with a 30-60-90 onboarding plan if you are building the function from scratch.
1. Policy and control documentation
Assemble an internal policy pack that covers what questionnaires actually ask:
- Information security / acceptable use
- Access control, provisioning, and termination
- Encryption, key management, and data handling
- Logging, monitoring, and alerting
- Incident response and business continuity / disaster recovery
- Vulnerability management and patch practices
- HR security (background checks, training)
- Vendor / subprocessor management
Keep version dates visible. Enterprise security review teams compare answers across years; drift raises questions.
2. Subprocessors and data flows

If you use fourth parties (critical vendors behind your service), expect questions. An honest maturity narrative beats pretending enterprise-grade supply-chain attestation you do not operate yet (fourth-party risk).
3. Prior questionnaires as golden sources
Export your last three completed SIG or Excel assessments (sanitized for customer-specific secrets). They are the fastest way to reuse approved wording. Many teams store these in a knowledge vault so AI-assisted tools can draft from your historical answers—not generic internet text.
4. Owner map and approval path
Define who owns:
- Standard technical controls answers
- Privacy / regulatory rows
- Non-standard legal commitments
Nothing slows procurement like an unanswered row waiting for "who owns this?".
5. Technical evidence (sanitized)
